Schooling in Bahrain
Bahrain has a large private school sector alongside its government schools. The Ministry of Education lists 81 private schools teaching more than 90,000 students, and its Directorate of Private Schools Licensing and Follow-Up regulates the sector. Private schools fall into three groups: national private schools, foreign private schools and foreign community schools, so families can choose between British, American, IB, Indian, French and other programmes.
Quality is checked independently by the Education & Training Quality Authority (BQA), whose Directorate of Private Schools Review inspects schools and publishes the reports. Its 2024–25 annual report covered reviews of 23 private schools alongside government schools, kindergartens and universities. Many parents read these reports closely when choosing a school, and they often prompt questions about extra support in particular subjects.
British qualifications are the most common route at secondary level, with schools preparing students for Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSEs and A-Levels. The IB is well established too: Ibn Khuldoon National School first offered the Diploma Programme in 1990, and there are now 15 IB World Schools in the country. American-curriculum schools such as Bahrain School in Juffair offer Advanced Placement courses and the AP Capstone programme.

The UK is the most popular destination for Bahraini students going abroad, according to the British Council, and a smaller but steady group heads to the US each year (around 440 in 2024/25). Many students stay at home: the University of Bahrain is the country's largest university with more than 30,000 students, RCSI Bahrain trains doctors and nurses, and Bahrain Polytechnic offers applied, industry-led degrees.
