Schooling in Kuwait
Private education plays a large part in Kuwait. In the 2021/22 school year there were 585 private schools alongside 653 public ones, and more than 255,000 pupils were in private schools. Around three in ten of those private-school pupils were Kuwaiti, so international schools here serve local families as well as the many expatriate communities.
Most foreign-curriculum schools follow either the British or the American system, with a third group of Arabic–English bilingual schools. British schools lead to IGCSE and A-Levels, while American schools run a US-style high school diploma, often with Advanced Placement courses. A small number of schools offer the IB, including the American International School of Kuwait, which runs the full IB continuum.
International schools also teach Arabic and religious studies in line with Ministry of Education requirements, so timetables are full. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel exams are sat in schools or through the British Council, which also takes private candidates.

Where students in Kuwait go next
Many graduates of Kuwait's international schools go abroad, with the US and UK the two main destinations. Kuwait's Ministry of Higher Education funds thousands of overseas scholarships each year, more than 3,400 in 2022, and over 15,000 Kuwaiti students are studying in the US. At home, Kuwait University, the American University of Kuwait and the Gulf University for Science and Technology accept A-Level and IB students, with English proficiency and test scores part of admissions.
