Schooling in Salmiya
Salmiya is a busy coastal district in Hawalli Governorate, and like all private schools in Kuwait its schools are licensed by the Ministry of Education's Private Education Department. Arabic and Islamic studies are part of the timetable at international schools, so pupils have a full school day before any extra study.
The district has a long history of international schooling. The English School, founded in 1953 and now on Mousaed Al-Azmi Street in Block 12, teaches the English National Curriculum in the primary years. The American International School of Kuwait in Block 11, known as Maidan Hawalli, is a long-standing IB school that teaches the Diploma Programme to older students. Salmiya also has a French school and several large Indian and Pakistani schools.
Salmiya is also a test-day hub. For the December 2026 SAT, four of Kuwait's seven test centres were in Hawalli Governorate, including the Indian Community School in Salmiya Block 10, and the American University of Kuwait on Salem Al Mubarak Street hosts British Council IELTS tests.
