Schooling in Kuwait City
Private schools in Kuwait City are licensed and inspected by the Private Education Department of the Ministry of Education, which also approves fee increases. As across the country, international schools must teach Arabic and Islamic studies for Muslim pupils, so timetables are full. Nationally there were 585 private schools in 2021/22, and the ministry counts 481,511 students in government, private Arabic and religious schools for 2026/27.
The Capital Governorate is largely residential, with neighbourhoods such as Surra, Yarmouk, Qortuba and Kaifan alongside the central districts of Sharq and Mirqab. International schooling here has deep roots: the American School of Kuwait first opened in the Dasman area of Sharq before moving to Hawally. Today Dasman Bilingual School, which opened in 1996 and is part of the Cognita group, teaches more than 3,500 pupils on an American curriculum.
Many families in the capital send their children to schools a short drive south in Hawalli Governorate, including the British School of Kuwait in Salwa and the American schools in Hawally and Salmiya.
