Schooling in Qatar
Most children in Qatar are taught in the private sector. In the 2022/23 academic year the country had 748 private K-12 schools with just over 230,000 students, roughly two in every three pupils, against 325 public schools. Private schools must meet the Qatar National School Accreditation standards set by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), but each follows its own curriculum.
British, American and International Baccalaureate programmes are the most common international routes, and the MoEHE's guide to private school systems also covers vocational options such as BTEC. Qatar has had an IB World School since 2002, when Qatar Academy Doha was authorised, and schools such as the American School of Doha offer Advanced Placement courses alongside the IB Diploma.
The school week runs from Sunday to Thursday, with lessons usually starting between 7am and 8am and finishing by early afternoon. The MoEHE sets a national calendar, and many private schools start on the same day as government schools, though each school follows its own approved term dates.

Every session is online, so it doesn't matter which city you live in.
Doha
The capital holds most of Qatar's international schools, from long-established British and American schools to newer IB campuses, plus the British Council exam office in Al Sadd.
Al Rayyan
Home to Education City, where Qatar Foundation's schools sit alongside branch campuses of international universities.
Al Wakrah
South of Doha, with Qatar Academy Al Wakra offering the full IB continuum and Doha British School's Al Wakrah campus, which moved to a new site in 2024.
Lusail
The fast-growing city to the north of Doha, where Doha British School opened a campus at Rawdat Al Hamama in 2022.
Al Khor
Qatar Academy Al Khor has been an IB World School since 2014, giving families in the north an IB option without the commute to Doha.

Where students in Qatar go next
Many graduates never need to leave Qatar for a top degree. Education City hosts branch campuses of Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Northwestern, Texas A&M, VCUarts, Weill Cornell Medicine and HEC Paris, alongside Hamad Bin Khalifa University, while Qatar University is the main national university. The UK has long been the most popular overseas destination for Qatari students, and many expatriate families aim for the US, Canada or their home country.
