Schooling in Doha
Private schools in Doha are licensed by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) and must meet the Qatar National School Accreditation standards, but each school chooses its own curriculum. National Planning Council figures for 2022 counted 119 private schools and 58 government schools in Doha municipality. Day to day, 'Doha' covers a wider area than the municipality: neighbourhoods such as Al Waab and Al Gharrafa are officially part of Al Rayyan, and the two municipalities together held 257 of Qatar's 338 private schools.
British schools teaching IGCSE and A-Levels with Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel sit alongside American schools offering AP and IB World Schools running the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes. Doha British School's original campus is in Ain Khaled, Park House English School is on Mesaimeer Road, and Qatar Foundation runs Qatar Academy Msheireb, a dual-language IB primary school in the heart of the old city.
Doha is also where most exams happen. The British Council office on Al Sadd Street runs Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel sessions for private candidates, and the Qatar University Testing Center in Al Tarfa, on the city's northern edge, offers the SAT and ACT International. School days usually start between 7am and 8am and finish in the early afternoon, which leaves time for tutoring before the evening traffic.
