Schooling in Al Rayyan
Al Rayyan is the municipality to the west of Doha, and much of what families call 'Doha', including Al Waab, Al Aziziya, Muaither and Al Gharrafa, sits inside it. It has more private schools than any other municipality in Qatar: National Planning Council figures counted 138 in 2022, up from 129 a year earlier, alongside 81 government schools. As elsewhere, private schools are licensed by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and choose their own curriculum.
Education City is the area's best-known address. Qatar Foundation's 12 km² campus holds eight universities alongside Qatar Foundation schools and programmes such as Qatar Academy, Awsaj Academy and the Academic Bridge Program, and the Qatar Academy schools follow IB programmes. Across Qatar, Qatar Foundation's 15 schools and education centres welcomed 9,434 students for 2026/27.
The rest of the municipality is just as varied. The American School of Doha in Al Waab was the first school in Qatar to offer both AP and the IB Diploma, Doha College moved from Al Waab to a new campus in Al Wajba in 2020, and the Gulf English School on Al Gharrafa Street teaches the English National Curriculum through to AS and A-Level.
