Business can feel like common sense, which is exactly why students underestimate it. Exams are built around case studies, and marks go to answers that use the evidence in front of them rather than general points that could apply to any company. Longer questions also demand evaluation: weighing up options and reaching a justified decision. Add the calculations, from cash flow to ratios, and a student who knows the content well can still find their grade stuck below where it should be.
Top grades in business are harder to reach than many families expect. Tes reports that just 15.6% of A-Level Business Studies grades in England were an A* or A in 2026, down from 16.1% in 2025, while JCQ puts the figure across all UK A-level results at 28.5%. Cambridge's worldwide statistics for June 2026 show 16.0% of Cambridge International A Level Business candidates reached an A or above and 14.9% were ungraded, and 29.4% of Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies results fell below grade C. The encouraging news is that the Education Endowment Foundation finds one-to-one tuition adds around five months' progress on average.
