Why combined science grades slip
Combined science asks students to keep three subjects moving at once. A student might enjoy biology but struggle with physics equations or chemistry calculations, and because the course is graded as a single pair, that weak subject drags both grades down. There are six papers at AQA, practical skills are examined on paper, and questions often set familiar ideas in unfamiliar contexts. Tier entry matters too: a student entered for foundation cannot get above 5–5, however well they do.
What the research says
JCQ's 2026 results show only 9.4% of GCSE Combined Science grades across the UK reached 7 or above, compared with 46.1% in separate GCSE Physics, and 58.3% reached grade 4 or above. AQA's Trilogy specification caps the foundation tier at 5–5, with the higher tier running from 4–4 to 9–9. The encouraging news is that the Education Endowment Foundation finds one-to-one tuition adds around five months' progress on average.
How a tutor helps
A good tutor looks across all three sciences, finds the topics costing the most marks and starts there. Sessions cover the maths combined science relies on, such as rearranging equations, unit conversions and graphs, alongside the required practicals: AQA's specification lists 21, and practical-based questions make up at least 15% of the marks. Tutors also practise extended answers and command words using mark schemes, and help students secure the content needed to sit the higher tier with confidence.
Curricula we cover
We tutor GCSE Combined Science with AQA (Trilogy and Synergy), Edexcel (Pearson) and OCR, on both foundation and higher tiers. For international students we cover Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science (0653), which awards one grade, and Co-ordinated Sciences (0654), which awards two. Students moving on to separate sciences can continue with our physics, chemistry and biology tutors. Families join us from the UK, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Canada and the US, with sessions online and scheduled around your time zone.
