Why accounting grades slip
Accounting builds on itself. A student who never quite settled double entry will struggle with the trial balance, then with adjustments, then with final accounts, and the gaps rarely show until a full exam question. Marks are also lost to small slips: a figure posted to the wrong side, an accrual forgotten, a heading left off a statement. Higher-level papers add written analysis, so a student who can calculate ratios still needs to explain what they mean for the business.
What the research says
Cambridge's worldwide statistics for June 2026 show that 24.7% of Cambridge IGCSE Accounting results fell below grade C, and 12.3% of Cambridge O Level Accounting candidates were ungraded. At Cambridge International A Level, only 7.9% of Accounting candidates achieved an A*, and 23.3% achieved an A or above. The encouraging news is that the Education Endowment Foundation finds one-to-one tuition adds around five months' progress on average.
How a tutor helps
A good accounting tutor finds the exact step where the method breaks down and rebuilds from there. Sessions drill double entry until it is automatic, then work through the adjustments and statement layouts that cost the most marks. Tutors use past papers and mark schemes from your child's board to show how workings earn credit even when a final figure is wrong. They also practise the written questions: interpreting ratios, comparing costing methods and making justified recommendations.
