Why economics grades slip
Economics looks familiar because it is about the real world, so students often expect it to be easy. But exams reward specific skills: drawing accurate diagrams, applying theory to unfamiliar data, and evaluating, which means weighing up arguments and reaching a supported judgement. Students who learn definitions and diagrams in isolation often find their answers stall in the middle mark bands. Micro and macro topics also link closely, so gaps in supply and demand quietly weaken later work on policy and trade.
What the research says
Economics is growing fast. JCQ reports that it had the largest rise in A-level entries in 2026 and is now the fifth most popular subject, and tutor2u's analysis puts entries at 46,257, up 10.3%. Yet only 7.6% of A-Level Economics entries were awarded an A*, below the 9.6% A* rate across all UK A-level results. In the US, College Board figures show that 32.8% of the 176,938 students who sat AP Macroeconomics in May 2025 scored a 1 or 2. The encouraging news is that the Education Endowment Foundation finds one-to-one tuition adds around five months' progress on average.
How a tutor helps
A good economics tutor finds where an answer stops earning marks and fixes that step. Sessions build accurate diagrams and show how to use them, not just draw them. Tutors practise data-response questions and essays with mark schemes from your child's board, so students see what application, analysis and evaluation look like on the page. They also keep students up to date with real economic examples, which make answers more convincing.
