Schooling in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has one of the largest international school sectors in the Middle East. ISC Research counted 333 international schools serving more than 370,000 students in 2025, and new campuses keep opening. British schools such as Kings College, Reigate Grammar and Aldenham Prep have recently opened in Riyadh, and Sherborne School opened in Jeddah in August 2025.
International schools are regulated by the Ministry of Education. Its rules require them to teach some Arabic, Islamic culture and Saudi history and geography, and they control which schools may admit Saudi nationals. In July 2026 a new General Education Law brought public, private and international schools under a single framework and wrote support for private and foreign investment in schools into law.
Public schools returned to a two-semester year in 2025β26 after several years of three terms, under a calendar fixed for four years. Private and international schools can choose their own academic system, so most follow the calendar of their curriculum: British schools prepare for Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel exams, American schools for AP and the SAT, and a growing group of schools for the IB.

Where students in Saudi Arabia go next
The UK and the US have long been the main overseas destinations for Saudi students. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship Program now focuses on the world's top 200 universities, with a target of 70,000 scholarships by 2030. At home, KFUPM admits international school graduates through an SAT track for scores of 1350 or above, so strong IB, A Level, AP and SAT results open doors both abroad and in the Kingdom.
