Schooling in Jeddah
Jeddah's schools are overseen by the Ministry of Education through its Jeddah education department. When the 2026β27 year opened in August 2026, around 700,000 students returned to 2,862 public, private and international schools across Jeddah, Rabigh, Khulais and Al-Kamil. Private and international schools follow the same national rules on Arabic, Islamic culture and Saudi studies, and on which schools may admit Saudi nationals.
The city has some of the oldest international schools in the Kingdom. The American International School of Jeddah began in 1952 as a parent cooperative and moved to a new campus in 2019, and the British International School of Jeddah opened in 1977 and now teaches Cambridge IGCSE and the IB Diploma. Many international schools and much of the expatriate housing sit in the northern districts such as Al Shati, Al Rawdah, Al Zahraa, Obhur and Al Muhammadiyah.
New schools keep arriving. Sherborne School opened a Jeddah campus in August 2025, and Knight Frank estimated in 2023 that the city would need around 42,600 extra private school seats by 2035.
