Schooling in Riyadh
Riyadh is the largest school system in the Kingdom. At the start of the 2025β26 year the Ministry of Education counted 6,873 schools in the Riyadh region. Private and international schools are licensed by the Ministry, which sets the Arabic, Islamic culture and Saudi studies they must teach and controls which schools may admit Saudi nationals.
The international sector has grown quickly as companies move regional headquarters to the capital. The Royal Commission for Riyadh City runs an International Schools Attraction Program to bring established foreign schools to the city, and in October 2026 Aster School became the eleventh school to join. Recent British arrivals include Ellesmere College in Al Hamra, a second British International School Riyadh campus at Al Waha, and Aldenham in the King Abdullah Financial District.
Long-established schools such as the American International School Riyadh, founded in 1963 and now on a campus in the north of the city, sit alongside British, IB and Indian-curriculum schools. Knight Frank estimated in 2023 that Riyadh would need more than 63,500 extra private school seats by 2035, so pressure on places is likely to continue.
