Why ICT grades slip
ICT looks familiar, which is exactly why it catches students out. Most of the marks come from practical tasks where small slips cost marks: a formula that is nearly right, a database field set to the wrong type, a web page whose styles are not saved in the right file. Theory questions ask for precise terms and clear explanations about networks, security and the systems life cycle, not general impressions. Students who never practise under timed conditions often run out of time before the last task.
What the research says
DfE data for England shows that 25.4% of Year 10–11 ICT teaching hours in 2025/26 were taught by teachers without a relevant post-A level qualification. In Cambridge IGCSE ICT, 72.5% of candidates worldwide reached grade C or above in June 2026, and just 13.0% achieved an A*. Cambridge's 0417 syllabus puts 60% of the marks on two practical papers. The encouraging news is that the Education Endowment Foundation finds one-to-one tuition adds around five months' progress on average.
How a tutor helps
A good ICT tutor works through past practical papers with your child, one skill at a time: spreadsheet formulae and lookups, database queries and reports, document layout and house style, and hand-written HTML and CSS. Sessions build a checklist approach so instructions are followed exactly and work is saved correctly. For the theory paper, tutors teach the precise vocabulary examiners expect and practise extended answers about the effects of IT, safety and security. Tuition follows your child's own course and exam board.
Curricula we cover
We tutor Cambridge IGCSE ICT (0417) and its 9–1 version (0983), Pearson Edexcel International GCSE ICT, GCSE Digital Technology in Wales and Northern Ireland, and Cambridge International AS & A Level Information Technology. GCSE ICT itself was withdrawn in England after the summer 2018 exams, so students there who want a computing GCSE take GCSE Computer Science instead. Families join us from the UK, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Canada and the US, and every session is online, one-to-one and scheduled around your time zone.
