Schooling in Oman
Alongside the government system, Oman has a large and growing private school sector. In 2022 there were 881 private schools and 46 international schools, overseen by the Ministry of Education's General Directorate of Private Schools. Many private schools teach the national curriculum, while international schools follow British, American or International Baccalaureate programmes, often with Arabic and Islamic studies alongside.
British-curriculum schools are the most common international option, preparing students for Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel IGCSEs and then AS and A Levels. A smaller group of IB World Schools, mostly in Muscat, offer the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes, and American schools such as TAISM offer Advanced Placement courses with the SAT for US-bound students.
Private candidates can sit Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel exams through the British Council in Oman in both the May/June and October/November series, which gives students a second chance to resit or add a subject.

Where students in Oman go next
Many Omani and expatriate graduates stay in Muscat, at Sultan Qaboos University or the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech), founded in 2007 with RWTH Aachen University. Others head abroad, most often to the UK and the US, helped in many cases by government scholarships for overseas study. Strong A Level or IB grades, an IELTS score where needed and, for the US, SAT results and AP courses make a real difference to these applications.
