Schooling in Muscat
Private and international schools in Muscat are licensed and overseen by the Ministry of Education through its General Directorate of Private Schools. The capital has the largest share of Oman's international schools: in 2024β25, 21 of the country's 47 international community schools were in Muscat Governorate, teaching 44,464 students, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information.
British-curriculum schools are the biggest group. British School Muscat follows the English National Curriculum from nursery to A Level, while many other schools prepare students for Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel IGCSEs and AS and A Levels. The American International School of Muscat in Ghala teaches an American curriculum with more than a dozen AP courses, and The Sultan's School in Seeb combines Omani requirements with international qualifications.
Muscat is also home to most of Oman's IB World Schools. ABA Oman International School in Madinat Al Irfan has been an IB school since 1996, Al Sahwa Schools since 2013, and Digital Private School was authorised for the Diploma in June 2025. Large community schools such as Indian School Muscat and Indian School Al Ghubra teach the Indian CBSE curriculum and also host SAT test days.
