Schooling in the UAE
Private schools educate a large share of children in the UAE, and each emirate has its own regulator: KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi and SPEA in Sharjah. Dubai alone had more than 400,000 students in private schools at the start of the 2026β27 year, and the emirate plans to open at least 100 new private schools by 2033.
The mix of curricula is unusually wide. In Dubai, the UK curriculum was the largest in 2024β25 at around 37% of private-school students, followed by Indian (26%), US (14%) and IB (7%) schools, with another 4% at schools combining UK and IB programmes. Among Emirati families in Dubai, the US curriculum is the most popular choice.
British-curriculum schools usually sit IGCSEs and A-Levels with either Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, so two students in the same year group can be preparing for different papers. The UAE also has more than 65 IB World Schools, most of them offering the IB Diploma.

Where students in United Arab Emirates go next
The UK is the most popular study-abroad destination for Emirati students, with more than 8,000 studying there in 2022, and many expat graduates follow the same path.
