Schooling in Abu Dhabi
Private schools in the emirate of Abu Dhabi are licensed and inspected by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), which covers three regions: Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and Al Dhafra. In October 2025 ADEK counted 220 private schools and 233 nurseries across the emirate, after licensing two new schools and seven nurseries that added 4,539 seats.
British and American schools are the two largest groups, alongside IB, Indian, French and Ministry of Education curriculum schools. British schools sit IGCSEs and A-Levels with Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, American schools prepare students for AP exams and the SAT, and a number of schools run the IB Diploma. Abu Dhabi also has charter schools, which are government schools run by private operators.
Many international schools are on the islands and in the city's newer suburbs. Saadiyat Island, Al Reem Island and Yas Island have several larger British and IB schools, while Khalifa City, Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City have a dense mix of American, British and Arabic-English bilingual schools. Yasmina American School in Khalifa City was one of the two new private schools ADEK licensed in 2025.
