Schooling in Sharjah
Private schools in Sharjah are regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA). A 2025 study carried out with SPEA put the emirate's K-12 enrolment at about 251,000, with 83% of students at private schools, and private enrolment has grown by about 3.3% a year since 2019. The number of private schools rose from 94 in 2013β14 to 129 in 2023β24.
SPEA groups the most popular curricula as British and IB, American, Indian and Ministry of Education, and the number of British and American schools grew steadily between 2017 and 2022. Indian and Pakistani curriculum schools follow their own April-start calendar. Since January 2022, Sharjah's private schools have run a four-day week from Monday to Thursday, with Friday, Saturday and Sunday off.
Families are spread across the city, with many schools in Al Majaz, Al Khan, Al Nahda and Al Taawun near the Dubai border, and newer clusters in Muwaileh, Aljada and around University City. SPEA inspects schools through its Itqan programme, which in 2023β24 reviewed 63 of the emirate's 129 private schools.
