Schooling in Al Wakrah
Al Wakrah sits on the coast south of Doha, and its municipality takes in the fast-growing suburbs of Al Wukair and Al Mashaf. Private schools here are licensed by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education like everywhere in Qatar. National Planning Council figures counted 41 private schools in Al Wakra municipality in 2022, up from 38 the year before, alongside 17 government schools.
Families have a real choice of curriculum without leaving the area. Qatar Academy Al Wakra, part of Qatar Foundation, is an IB World School authorised for the Middle Years Programme in 2018, the Primary Years Programme in 2019 and the Diploma in 2020. Doha British School's Al Wakra campus, founded in 2014, moved to a new purpose-built site in September 2024 and teaches the National Curriculum for England through to IGCSE.
Al Wukair has its own cluster of schools. GEMS Wellington School Qatar follows the English National Curriculum from FS1 to Year 13, and its neighbour GEMS American Academy Qatar runs an American programme from Pre-K to Grade 12 that culminates in AP courses.
